UNPLUGGED Family Game Night on Friday   What is it?? “Unplugged" is a FREE (non-tech – board-type) game night sponsored by Summitt Elementary PTA to provide a place for families to gather, play games, get to know each other & have fun.
When is it?? Friday, October 4, 2013; 6-8 pm
What should I bring?? Bring your family, your good humor, and a family game if you would like. We will have some games on hand, but bring your family favorite, or come ready to try something new. We will have “game facilitators” to help monitor game areas
Will there be food? We will have some snacks available for sale, you can bring your own dinner/snacks from home or eat before you come. Whatever works best for your family!


This is FREE fun for the whole family, NOT a drop-off event, Come Join the Fun!!


Marathon Kids  The Marathon Kids Kick-off is on SaturdayOctober 5 from 9-11 a.m. at UT Mike Meyers stadium featuring Mario Lopez.


Summitt Family Night  Catfish Parlour Family Night is WednesdayOct. 9  from 5:30-9PM. Join other Summitt Families for dinner. A portion of the meals will be donated to Summitt. Look for our "celebrity cooks" ready to fry up some catfish for you!


HEB Gift Cards  If you shop at HEB it’s a great way to support the school without having it hit your budget. You buy them at face value and 4% goes back to the PTA. Email Kynna at Kynna@austin.rr.com to pre-order and arrange for pick up after school on Monday October 7thin the Great Hall or Wednesday October 9th at the 4th/5th Grade pick up line. Cards come in $25, $50, $100, & $200 denominations and can be purchased with cash or check only.

Volunteer Have you wanted to support Summitt Elementary; however, you don't have too much time due to other commitments? Would you have one hour per month to participate in the Summitt Campus Advisory Council (CAC)? This group of staff, parents and community members advise on various issues related to Summitt. Please email the Principal, Dedra Standish if you are interested: dstandis@austinisd.org. We are looking for community members as well if you know of someone who is active in the community.

Volunteer for Yearbook Coordinator The PTA is seeking a yearbook coordinator for the new school year. The coordinator collects photos, lays out the pages of the yearbook (with the help of the Interstate rep), coordinates sales and distribution of the yearbooks. Food/drink donations  Please help by donating the following items. Items can be dropped off in the Great Hall.
Pre-K: 12-24 juices boxes (100% juice preferred)
Kindergarten: 2 liter sodas
1st grade: 12-24 packs of Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite or Dr. Pepper
2nd grade: Tall cans of Pringles chip for Pringles Toss Game (One of the most popular games!)
3rd grade: Halloween candy (2 lb. bag of individually wrapped pieces)
4th grade: 12-24 individual snack size bags of chips for the Food Court
5th grade: Tall cans of Pringles chips for Pringle Toss Game


Fall Fest Classroom Sign-ups Classroom sign-ups are now online! Follow this link and look for your child’s grade and teacher. Pick a shift (or two), and that’s it!


Needed Items to Borrow  Please let us know if you have these items for us to use during Fall Fest:

Coolers
Labeled Tables and coolers can be dropped off in the Great Hall beginning October 14. Please label your tables & coolers. Please contact jenniferfonken@sbcglobal.net if you are available to pick up coolers/tables on Saturday morning and deliver to the school by 10 AM.


Volunteers during Set-up  We need volunteers starting at 8 AM on Saturday. Set up begins at 8 AM and will last most of the day, so come when you can! Here are some volunteer opportunities:
- Volunteers needed to help set up the games
- Do you have a truck and can do some semi-heaving lifting? We need to help with the big games, tables, coolers, ticket booth.
- 1-2 people with a truck to start filling the coolers with ice at 1 PM. Texan Market has generously donated as much ice as we need.
- 4 volunteers to start the popcorn and cotton candy machines by noon or 1pm.
- Pick up DONATED hot dogs from HEB at 2PM
- Cooks to grill up the hotdogs and sausages! Volunteer for a 30 minute shift starting at 3:30 PM!
- Help hang signs for games, food booth etc.
- Please contact fallfest2013@gmail.com if you can help.


Student Volunteers Needed Do you have a child who needs volunteer hours? Send them to fall fest to volunteer. We will provide them a volunteer certificate at the end of their shift. We need help setting up (starting at 10 AM) and running the games (3:30-7 PM). If your student wants more information on volunteering, please contact betharcotta@gmail.com.

Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Festival  Come celebrate Tet Trung Thu, the Vietnamese lunar harvest festival on Friday, Sept. 20,  6:30-8:30 P.M. Admission is $3 per person with a free lantern and treats for children with an entry ticket. Food and drinks are available for purchase. Food is $5/plate. There will be Games, Arts & Crafts, Lantern Parade, and the Lion and Dragon Dance. For the history of the Mid-Autumn Festival, click here.

Theater Arts classes  Ms. Coppola provides Theatre Arts classes in her classroom every Wednesday until 4 pm. Classes cost $10 each week and forms can be picked up from the large table at the end of the Great Hall in the main building.

Y-tie Fundraiser  Brochures for our Y-tie fundraiser went out in the Monday folders. We also have two special colors that were sent to us. They are not listed on the order form, but if you would like BURNT ORANGE or FUCHSIA with SILVER Y-ties… please add those onto the order form and include how many pairs you would like! These colorful and fun shoelaces never require tying! They are great for the kiddos and great gift ideas! The Summitt Physical Education department hosts this fundraiser every other school year to raise money to fund new equipment, music, teaching materials and school events such as CATCH Night and Field Day. This fundraiser will last 2 weeks, and we will start filling orders and delivering them to the kiddos during the first week of the fundraiser. Thank you in advance for your support!

Summitt students to sing at City event  Support our Summitt choir and celebrate our sister cities. The City of Austin and Austin Sister Cities International cordially invite you to join them for The September Concert, a celebration of peace and humanity through music. It will be on Thursday, September 19th from 6-8 pm at City Hall, 301 W. 2nd Street. This event will feature Welcoming America’s Welcoming Cities and Counties Initiative. Free Parking is available in the City Hall Garage. More information is here.

  • Grand prizes, such as games, toys, t-shirts, collectibles, jewelry and other goodies for kids of all ages that are worth $8 to $15
  • Large storage bins with lids to use to store items for future Fall Fests
Start thinking about what books you want to donate to Fall Fest. We'll let you know soon where to drop them off. Don't worry about bringing the Grand Prizes or storage bins into the school. We'll come to you! Just email fallfest2013@gmail.com and we'll be glad to set up a day and time for pick up.

HEB events  The HEB on Jollyville/Braker invites you to their Primo Picks on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 3-7 p.m. Pick up a Passport at the entrance and get stamps at all the “Primo Picks” stations throughout the  store. Turn in your completed passport before leaving and the school with the most completed passports receive $500!
The HEB on Parmer/McNeil has their Primo Picks event on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be food demos, including samples of Queso poblano chicken sausage, gluten-free Bratwurst, and HEB fully-cooked orange chicken. Grandparent’s Day lunch with students  Summitt will celebrate Grandparents Day on Friday, Sept. 13. Grandparents are invited to have lunch with their grandchild during the student's lunch time. Click on the Lunch Schedule to find out your student's lunch time.


Volunteers needed  Grandparents Day is this Friday, September 13 and the PTA is looking for volunteers to help set up in the morning and greet/sign-in grandparents from 10:30am-1:30pm. Please contact Phyllis Woodley pmarucci@yahoo.com if you are interested in volunteering.


Rita’s Ice on Friday  Rita’s Italian Ice will be available for sale after school on Friday, Sept. 13. It’s $3 per cup.


Summitt T-Shirt Order Forms It went out in your child's Monday folder this week. Order forms will also be available in the school office. Please return completed forms with payment to your child's teacher. Make checks payable to “Summitt PTA.” If paying with cash, please enclose exact amount for your order. Shirts will only be available to order during the fall semester and while supplies last.

Gifted and Talented Nominations The AISD Fall Gifted and Talented Nomination Period begins this week and ends Friday, September 13. There are 2 nomination periods each school year, one in the fall and one in January. If you are interested in nominating your child for the Gifted and Talented program, please pick  up a form from Summitt's main office, complete it and return it by September 13. Nomination forms are available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

Free ESL Classes  AISD offers free adult English classes at Webb Middle School. Registration is Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m. Click here for more info.
Girls On Track will be coming to Murchison Middle School and will be serving girls in grades 6th-8th grade 2 days a week from 3:45-4:45pm. The Kick-Off Party for signing up will be September 17 from 3-4 pm. There will be food, fun and lots of information about our program and how to get signed up.
Girls on Track is a transformational physical activity-based youth development program for girls in 6th-8th grade. We teach life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.
